Lena Dunham is nothing if not divisive, so it should come as no surprise that some of Taylor Swift’s wedding guests weren’t impressed by the Girls creator’s speech during the singer’s Madison Square Garden wedding.
Dunham was reportedly one of “lots of speeches” during Swift and Travis Kelce’s July 2 rehearsal dinner ahead of Friday’s lavish party. The Daily Mail reports that the bride and groom took turns introducing each other’s loved ones ahead of each person’s speech. When Dunham took the mic, though, the 40-year-old actress made a joke that didn’t land too well with the audience.

Dunham reportedly joked that “American football is just straight guys reenacting gay porn.” An insider claims that the joke “divided” guests at the 100-person event, which Dunham’s ex-boyfriend Jack Antonoff also attended. The source added that Dunham’s joke generated “gasps and laughs” from the guests.
What matters, though, is what the bride thought and, according to the insider, Swift loved the speech and called Dunham a “genius.”

Swift and Dunham have been close friends for over a decade. Swift was one of Dunham’s bridesmaids during her 2021 wedding to musician Luis Felber in 2021. Swift and Dunham are partially connected through Swift’s longtime collaborator, Jack Antonoff, whom Dunham dated from 2012 to 2017. Antonoff is now married to actress Margaret Qualley.
Swift and Kelce’s rehearsal dinner was followed by July 3’s celebrations, which reportedly involved 1000 guests. The couple, who started dating in 2023, are celebrating after reportedly tying the knot in a legal ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee, in late June.
